Skunk Anansie Live in AFAS Live: A Photographic Storm from the Pit

Saturday March 22 was one for the books. I had the incredible opportunity to photograph Skunk Anansie at AFAS Live in Amsterdam — a venue known for its killer sound and electric atmosphere. Together with seven other photographers, I found myself into the photopit, cameras ready, all of us vying for the perfect shot. There’s something thrilling about that unspoken competition — a mix of camaraderie and focus — that adds an extra buzz to the experience.

We were allowed to shoot the first three songs, and what a trio they were! The set kicked off with "This Means War", a heavy, thundering opener that immediately set the tone. Skin stormed the stage, wrapped in a long black coat that swirled around her like a dark cape with every fierce gesture she made. We were thrown straight into the chaos — in the best possible way.

Then came "Charlie Big Potato", a classic that had the crowd roaring. Skin’s energy was absolutely off the charts. She owned the stage, throwing every bit of herself into the performance — fierce, raw, unstoppable.

It made photographing her both a challenge and a dream. The third track, "Because of You", brought even more intensity. Every movement, every expression was charged with emotion. It was a masterclass in stage presence.

Skin doesn’t just sing — she commands. Her voice hits you like a wall of sound, so powerful it cuts straight through your chest. It's not just loud — it’s alive. You don’t just hear it, you feel it. Even with earplugs in, the energy was almost overwhelming. But that’s exactly what makes photographing a Skunk Anansie show so unforgettable: the sheer force of it all.

After those three songs, we walked out of the pit totally pumped, almost as if we’d been performing ourselves. Adrenaline still rushing, camera batteries already halfway drained, but hearts full. Moments like that remind me why I love concert photography — it’s about capturing the essence of a performance, and last night, Skin gave us everything.

Skunk Anansie doesn’t just put on a show — they create a storm. And being able to photograph that storm? Absolutely unreal.
